Get article full text from your library when at home or other off-campus locations

Librarians and library administrators: Please register your OpenURL resolver in the WorldCat Registry.

More information

This OpenURL Resolver for Individuals is meant solely for end users seeking to restore access to link resolvers from their home or other off-campus connections.

Both OCLC-participating and non-OCLC institutions are encouraged to register their link resolvers in the WorldCat Registry, a free Web directory for libraries and library consortia that centralizes and automates information sharing with vendors, consortial partners and other third parties.

OCLC libraries that utilize the FirstSearch reference service can also register a resolver in their WorldCat Services administrative settings. (Resolver data registered in this manner is automatically loaded into WorldCat Registry.)

Do you often search for articles and other electronic content at Web sites such as WorldCat.org or ERIC (www.eric.ed.gov)? When you do this from a library workstation or another on-campus location, you can usually link from search-result citations at these sites right to article full text, abstracts or other online information to which your library subscribes.

When you're not on the campus network, however, you no longer have access to the library's "link resolver" (also known as a "link server"). This resolver recognizes bibliographic and other data embedded in the link you have clicked, then connects you to appropriate online resources at the library. The OpenURL Resolver for Individuals lets you restore access to library resources.

Create a free account and supply the information outlined below. You'll instantly create an association between your off-campus Internet connection and the library's resolver via the OCLC OpenURL Gateway. (To access library services, you may still have to enter your library card ID or use a virtual private network.)

To use this service, you'll need to provide the following technical information:

1 You can use this IP detection site or ask your Internet Service Provider. You may also be able to locate your IP address within your computer's network/internet control panel.

2 If you do not know the base URL of your library's resolver, contact the library or search the WorldCat Registry for your institution. When you locate your library's profile, click the "OpenURL Resolvers" link under the heading "Services." A larger institution may have multiple resolvers listed in its profile.

3 Advanced users can also specify additional settings for the OpenURL standard, including identifiers and genres for 0.1, and namespaces, transports and metadata formats for Z39.88. (More information about the XML schema is available here. )
